Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC show Roseanne. However, her parents didn't want her to perform until she turned older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry claims she never wanted to be an actor in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved to New York in search of TV roles. Perry was able to land small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, she played a supporting role in ABC's political thriller Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, the actress was selected to play the younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen character of her mom's character. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
